Everyone told me I couldn’t do it. They said I needed a production crew and better, more expensive cameras and equipment for lighting and audio— which would cost thousands. So I just gave up and was feeling sorry for myself, when I posted this to instagram:
Overnight I received hundreds of emails from fans who shared their stories, struggles and fears. I realized that we can’t always change our circumstances, but we can change our perspective. And that’s what they helped me do.
I reached out to Jared, a PA from On My Block who is studying film, and told him we had to ignore everyone who said we couldn’t do it. We had to try. And we had to try to do it the way we wanted and make an adventure out of it.
So with just the two of us, two cameras, a couple flashlights and a portable speaker, we shot my first official music video.
The behind the scenes videos actually capture something quite special-- moments of self-discovery, where I’m experiencing so many things for the first time. When we got to the top of the mountain, I saw the city, and my circumstances, from an entirely new perspective. And if it weren’t for all my fans who sent those emails, I would have missed out on it all.
I realized the best way I could help all my fans who reached out, is to better myself through new experiences, share those moments, and hopefully inspire them to go out and experience new things for themselves, meet new people, get to know themselves better and ultimately gain new perspectives. So we’re now working on a series of videos we’re calling ‘Never Have I Ever’ capturing me trying new things I’ve never done before. Stay tuned!
When’s the last time you did something for the first time? Tell me the story in the comments below!
